A lot of Small Things

Crafting Interaction, Flow, and Light at Fratton Community Centre

The Fratton Community Centre, located in the heart of Fratton, Portsmouth, is a vital hub for social, recreational, and educational activities. Reflecting the city s long-standing tradition of inclusivity and community-centered architecture, our redesign.

A Lot of Small Things focuses on thoughtful, small strategies that enhance interaction, flow, light, and transparency. These elements reimagine the center as a more welcoming and harmonious space. The design prioritizes the relationship between humans and their environment.

Wood and fabric were chosen as primary materials for their warmth, tactility, and adaptability. The fabric ceiling stretches seamlessly from the entrance to the multipurpose hall, allowing light to interact and flow across the space. Subtle translucency gives the material life, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow while fostering a calming ambiance. The color palette reflects this subtle approach, incorporating neutral tones to ensure inclusivity, especially for neurodivergent users.

Inspired by the community center’s logo depicting human figures intertwined with tree leaves the redesign integrates nature-inspired elements into the space.

Rotating leaf-structured louvers line the corridor enhances light play, and visual interest while symbolizing the interaction between humans and nature. At the entrance, a new glass door etched with the logo invites visitors in, casting colorful reflections throughout the interior as sunlight filters through. This small intervention not only creates a vibrant focal point but also sets the tone for the inclusive, community-driven design within.

The redesigned spaces celebrate connection and adaptability. Wall-mounted furniture with interlocking joineries allows users to fold and reattach components as needed, promoting flexibility while reflecting a refined craftsmanship. Each interaction with these elements like unfolding a table or adjusting a bench reinforces the center s spirit of functionality and user engagement.

To deepen the connection with the community, we introduced hanging lamps in the corridor. These lamps will be co-created by the center s users, fostering a sense of ownership and pride while enhancing the overall atmosphere.

A Lot of Small Things celebrates the power of subtle, human-centered design Strategies to transform spaces. By weaving together elements of light, materiality, and adaptability alongside inspiration drawn from nature and community identity we have reimagined the Fratton Community Centre as a place that invites comfort, creativity, and connection. A space where small interventions collectively create a meaningful impact.
