Type – Private Residential Renovation
Location – Yangon
Total Floor Area – 100 sqft
Year – Completed in 2019

This kitchen is part of a private renovation for an older residential property. The house had so much history in its walls that a modern, flat-panel kitchen just wouldn’t have felt right. I decided to lean into a Classic style to respect the building’s roots while giving the owners a space that feels high-end and intentional.

The Design Choices
- The Cabinets: A black wooden finish gives the kitchen a heavy, permanent feel. To keep it from looking too dark or moody, a thin golden trim is added to the panels. It’s a small detail, but it makes the whole room feel much more elegant.
- Classic Materials: Nothing can go wrong with a black-and-white checkerboard floor in an old house. It’s a bold look that ties the kitchen to the rest of the home. Pairing this with white subway tiles and black granite keeps the palette simple but sharp.
- The Hardware: Instead of standard pulls, golden handles were used to act like jewelry for the cabinets and tie back into the gold trim on the doors.
- Connecting the Spaces: Since this is a private home, glass-paneled doors were added to feel the kitchen connected. By looking straight through to the living room, it makes the whole floor feel like one big, open space.
Mood Board

It is a functional, hard-working kitchen that does not sacrifice the Old World charm of the house. It feels mature, expensive and most importantly like it belongs in the building.
